Cabaret Vintage: 1940’s Billie Holiday-style Glamour Dress

This dress recently appeared on a great segment of E!Talk worn by the lovely Jill Barber when she recently visited Cabaret to speak about her newly released cd and her passion for fashion. We’ve received a few inquires about the dress so we thought we would re-feature this great find.

This is an original 1940s original with some of the beautiful touches that were a halmark of that period. A great stage-style dress, the top of the bodice is a beige coloured netting that has been hand detailed with rhinestones. At the side, the flower accent that graces the hip is comprised of silk handcut and assembled petals of various fabric colours. Together they create a stunning bouquet. As the segment on E!Talk points out, this dress is very Billie Holliday in nature with the great styling and cut of the bodice and hem.

Cabaret Vintage New Arrival: 1940’s Wine Taffeta Cocktail Dress

This is the quintessential 1940s ball gown. In a wine coloured taffeta,this dress is best worn with a full crinoline authentic to the period. However, even without the wide girth of a crinolined skirt this gown still stands in a league of its own. The skirt is accented by a basket-weave of fabric that adds even more texture to the overall look. The front detailing frames the neckline in a very flattering way and creates a small waist with the boning throughout the bodice. This dress has a metal zipper at the side. Cabaret Vintage New Arrival: 1940’s White Lace Dress with sweetheart neckline

Perfect for a beech wedding that’s a little less conventional or a great dress for a summer party, this white lace dress has a hemline that brushes the ankle and a layered wide skirt. The top layer of the dress is a beautiful fine Chantilly-type lace and is accented at the hem with a webbed fabric that is sheered at the ends for a dramatic look. The second underskirt is comprised of the same fabric while the third skirt is an opaque satin. The bodice has an asymmetrical detail at the front and tightly fitted all around. Fun Vintage Finds – The Fabergette Perfume Canister

This piece is truly a find. In the late 1940s designers Faberge had a perfume line and applied their attention to detail and design to their packaging as well. This is a one dram size of their signature fragrance Aphrodisia in a roll on format.

New Vintage Arrival: 1940’s Silk Organza and Lace Dress with Collar Accent AP

Subtle detail is the order of the day with this 1940’s original. The foundation of it all is a beautiful silk dress with a round skirt and a sweetheart neckline. Layered on top is an airy silk organza skirt that is carried to the top in a deep v that starts at the front and continues to the back creating a faux bateau look. To add to the modest look of the dress a very fine lace is used to cover the bodice and forms a high-necked collar that finished off in a light knot at the nape of the neck. Though there is a lot happening in the dress in details, the overall look of the piece is unified and quite beautiful.

Wear your blooms – vintage spring jewelry at Cabaret Vintage

Spring is here! But unfortunately in most parts the warm weather hasn’t arrived yet. So while it may be a bit to early for the floral dresses and the light clothes, you can still brighten your day with a vintage broach or earring featuring some spring blooms. These are some of the lovely bouquet of not-so-fresh-cut flowers in our jewelry case. Still lively and full of colour these vintage broaches are from the 1920s to the 1960s. Crafted from a variety of materials these pieces are a great accent to the winter coat that you may not be willing to part with yet, or as a great accent to an updo hairstyle.

The great thing though – none of these blooms ever wilt.
