It’s all about image right? Status? Labels = Prestige= Celebrity? On most checkout magazines and glossy entertainment TV shows there is no shortage of who is wearing what to wear, and many of us try to emulate this by aspiring to by the same names for the same instant fame. What does this result in though? More of the same, nothing new and a disposable look that changes faster than the season. If you go to the experts you’ll actually get a contrary story than those in the editorials. Fashion is not about what’s on for the minute, but developing personal style. But what is personal style? In Toronto this week, this is a sentence that most people are likely to utter than any other time of the year. With the Toronto International Film Festival in town not only is our fair city a haven for the glitterati, but it also gives us local folk a chance to shine as well. TIFF boasts a stellar lineup of stars here to premiere their new flicks, and an extra bonus that gives a leg up from other festivals; a record amount of tickets available to the public. It is much easier to get festival tickets to TIFF screenings than Cannes or Sundance. So when your BFF lands tickets to a hot screening at Roy Thompson hall this evening there is only one question – what to wear?
The staple for theatregoers this week seems to be basic black. Its everywhere from the media in the trenches to the lovelies on the red carpet. Emerging from one of the most colourful summers in years, Fall ’08 seems to have seen a resurgence of the non-colour. Though it has turned quite cold in a short amount of time here in Toronto, there are still many bearing their arms with lovely sheath dresses and low décolletage. However, for the more adventurous Cabaret has outfitted some red-carpet bodies in a little vintage class that has definably stood out. Check out our gallery for some choice pics.
So what to do if you are looking last minute for something to make you ready to face film festival crowds and parties? Start with some comfortable footwear. With TIFF, you never know where you will find yourself…and with whom. Think classic and functional as even with tickets or passes you may end up waiting in line for your time to shine. For hair, as most of us still have day jobs in addition to being a fashion enthusiast so simply saying “go to your stylist for a blow-out” is not an option for most. Most likely you will barely have enough time to get home and shower before you have to get to the show much less get to the salon. Go for a natural, clean look as it’s the fastest to achieve and the least likely to turn into a pumpkin at midnight just when the post-screening party is getting started. When looking for the perfect outfit; think again comfy and clean. Skip the frou-frou and go for classic lines, and fun eclectic pieces to make you stand out. This is the time to have fun! And remember, when you walk down the streets – strut it.

Celebrity Vintage and the Toronto Film Festival
It used to be that vintage clothes were only worn by artists, eccentrics, and people who couldn’t afford to go shopping at the mall. Not anymore!
Today, some vintage clothes are as popular as the hottest designer labels. At the same time, many of the new clothes from the Fashion Runways to H&M and Zara are more obviously “vintage inspired” than ever! And celebrities wearing vintage…
What’s going on?
First, in fashion today, pretty much anything goes. Sure there will always be “trendy” items that will be the focus of a given season, but more than ever, a confident woman has license to wear anything and everything that she desires. In fact, mixing high-end designer clothes with vintage finds, like Sarah Jessica Parker and many celebrity stylists, is becoming an enviable art.
In addition, more and more celebrities are being photographed wearing vintage pieces and the World loves its celebrities. From Julia Roberts’ gorgeous vintage Valentino Oscar gown to Sienna Miller’s vintage outfits on the streets of London, New York and Toronto, as we see more celebrities embracing vintage fashion, we start to embrace it, too.
Toronto is actually well known for its vintage fashion. We constantly hear that Cabaret, and Queen West, are ‘shopping musts’ for the dozens of celebrities, world travelers and designers that come and shop with us. The area is known as a vintage fashion hotspot in the world, without the crushing prices of New York and London, because of numerous articles in some of the world’s most exclusive travel guides. From Hip hop’s Andre 3000 , rockers, The Killers and Franz Ferdinand, to starlets, Mandy Moore and Natalie Portman and many more, they have all shopped at Cabaret.
So don’t be surprised to see the many of the Toronto international Film Festival stars shopping in West Queen West at Cabaret, I Miss You or 69 Vintage and not just the obvious Yorkville spots. At a certain point, anyone with money can buy new designer clothing, but with vintage there’s only one, and it’s always now or never!
What are you waiting for? If you’ve never worn vintage before, perhaps now is the time to start.

Why Vintage?
Posted on | July 22, 2008 | No Comments

But why vintage? Because vintage is hot. And with the vintage sensibility being popularized by shows like Sex and the City, more and more people are discovering its allure. Vintage has the ability to jazz up today’s couture by adding items from the past with inimitable flare, while keeping what is hippest and hottest from the present – you!
Which is exactly why the stars are flocking to the vintage scene. Indeed, it’s not uncommon to glimpse a famous face browsing and buying from Cabaret’s divinely dazzling racks. The store has been frequented by the likes of Brooke Shields, Helena Christensen, David Arquette, Mandy Moore and Andre 3000, to name a few, and you never know who you might see looking for that classy yet avante garde piece for the next Awards show, or a period piece for an upcoming role.
Perhaps you’re looking to set your style apart from the standard “run of the mall” look. Or maybe you’re seeking the craftsmanship and quality that seem to be a fading feature in today’s fashion industry. Either way, you’ve come to the right place, for Cabaret’s collection features unique originals that have stood the test of time. With most pieces garnered from private collections and estates, Cabaret’s buyers possess a keen eye, and all pieces are hand selected, meticulously restored and utterly unique, like you.
