Fun Vintage Finds – The Fabergette Perfume Canister

This piece is truly a find.  In the late 1940s designers Faberge had a perfume line and applied their attention to detail and design to their packaging as well.  This is a one dram size of their signature fragrance Aphrodisia in a roll on format.

Cabaret Vintage Cocktail Bride: Jewels in Portugal 2010

Jewels on her perfect wedding day in Portugal wearing The Grace Kelly from the Cabaret Collection

This Cabaret Vintage Cocktail bride took her show on the road and tied the knot in a small village in Portugal.  When Jewels came to us, she was looking for a dress that would travel well and be comfortable in the weather of her destination wedding.

Hi Tao!

So our wedding in the village of Sintra, Portugal has come and gone and everything was perfect!!!! We couldn’t have asked for anything to go any better, which is fabulous, considering we arrived 3 days in advance and had exactly that much time to plan EVERYTHING! We went to the fresh farmers market the afternoon before and selected flowers. We met with the village mayor the day before and his mom insisted to make us a traditional Portuguese cake, which was out of this world! It was a truly magical experience and the dress was the perfect fit for the occasion. Our good friend, Ben, came with us and happens to be a professional photographer.

Thanks again for all your help in helping me get my perfect dress (and the only dress I looked at!). It was love at first sight!

Take care,

The Multi-tasking Vintage Necklace

1970's Goldtone necklace from Cabaret Vintage

1970's Goldtone necklace from Cabaret Vintage

If you look in our New Arrivals Gallery you’ll find quite a number of dresses and outfits that feature this necklace.  Frankly, its been our go-to accessory for quite some time in the store and has been featured in the window display and in photos numerous times.

Its the little black dress of jewelry.

We’ve paired it beautifully with 1950’s knit day dresses, 1970s evening wear, and even peeking out from a 1940’s suit set.  Its been admired by many customers but hasn’t found a home, a frequent comment that we hear is “I have nothing to wear it with”.  A bold piece of fine jewelry can make its own place of distinction with a variety of outfits.  My favorite look for this piece was with a bold 1950’s Kelley Green knit dress and it also looked fantastic when borrowed for a photo shoot to be styled with our Cabaret Collection Tulip dress in antique white.

Explore your closet in an open minded way and try out pieces in your jewelry box that may have slipped out of favor; you may find a great new look right under your nose.

Wedding Purses – Something old or something gold

A selection of vintage purses from the 1950s to 70s

A selection of vintage purses from the 1950s to 70s

On the bride’s special day there are many final touches that come to mind that should be addressed such as “What shoes to wear? ”  ”What kind of veil?” but one that is frequently forgotten is – “Where do I put the tissues that I most likely will need?”  An impromptu survey of some of our former brides says usually it ends up in the cleavage.  Not the classiest start to one of the most fabulous events of your life.

While some dresses, including our Cabaret Collection Grace Kelly Dress have pockets – some don’t, and often its the bridesmaid’s duty to hold the collection of must haves as the bride walks down the aisle.

For purses, there are a quite a few choices that are available for both the bride and bridal party.  There are clutches, which frequently have a concealed shoulder strap that can be used if both hands are needed for a task; such as welcoming your guests.  Delicate wrist straps are also a good choice as your purse will always be handy and can accentuate your outfit.

When it comes to colour or fabrication there are a variety of ways to go.  In most boutiques these days it seems to be en vogue to go for satin or silk covered purses that blend into the dress to become discrete.  We however think that adding a bit of vintage distinction is a great way to go.  A white beaded bag adds shine to look and can be a good size to hold all the neciessites.

The advantage of also going with a shimmering white that is of varied construction (beads and or sequin) is that there is a spectrum of colours reflected in the overall purse making it easy to coordinate with a variety of dresses in case the bride is wearing white, winter white, antique white, ivory, taupe or darker.

Cabaret Vintage Gold Purse

Within our Queen Street store we’ve found a lot of cocktail brides leaning towards metallics as their fabric of choice for their wedding purse.  In particular, our selection of gold purses are very popular.   We are very lucky to have in store a variety of styles from the 1940’s to the 1970’s such as the purse shown above.  Many brides seem to love the fact that they are investing in a vintage piece that is not only a fabulous accent for the wedding day, but a great evening piece that can be worn for years to come at a variety of events.

Bonus, with a vintage purse you’ve already crossed one item off a wedding to do list:  Something old and something fabu.
